Where else should the American Canons' lineup start than with Ralph "Transparent Eye" Emerson leading off?
The teacher is following the student as Emerson is taking over the starting center field duties from Whitman this year, as Whitman will be given some more time off this season.
Though a great student of the game, Emerson often over-thinks his at-bats and sometimes runs to pitcher's mound when he gets a hitas per his motto, "Do not go where the base-path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."
And while Emerson is certainly the player from whom so many others take their cue; he's the first to encourage them to develop their own swings and their own style for fielding. After all, whoso would be a ballplayer must be a nonconformist.
